Une dimension mythique pour un format culte.
Nous connaissons tous ce format incontournable et nous le rencontrons au quotidien. Son histoire nous précède et nous plonge dans notre passé commun.
L’invention des feuilles de papier a lieu en Chine en 105 et son usage se diffuse vers 1350 en Europe, pourtant malgré son utilisation, aucun format spécifique n’est pour autant défini. Chaque imprimeur conçoit alors son papier à la taille et au grammage qu’il souhaite. Il faut attendre 1786 pour que le scientifique et philosophe allemand Georg Christoph Lichtenberg lance l’histoire du format A4 et définisse la proportion idéale des formats de papier.
Élégant par sa taille, pratique dans son usage, le 21 X 29,7 s'impose comme une norme incontournable et conditionne nos pratiques. Chaque jour, nous le noircissons et nous le consommons.
L'ambition, dans cette nouvelle exposition, est de proposer aux artistes de s'approprier cette valeur universelle, d'en souligner la singularité et d'habiter le format comme il souhaite, à l'image d'une carte blanche qui n'a de contrainte que de respecter l'universalité de cette précieuse feuille de papier.

A legendary dimension for a cult format
We all know this essential format and encounter it daily. Its history precedes us and dives us into a shared past.
The invention of paper sheets dates back to 105 AD in China, and it spread around 1350 in Europe; no specific format had been defined before. Each printer then designed their paper to the size and weight they wanted. It was not until 1786 that the German scientist and philosopher Georg Christoph Lichtenberg shaped the history of the A4 format and defined the ideal proportion of paper formats.
Elegant in its size, practical in its use, the 21x29.7 format has established itself as an essential standard and determines our daily practices.
The ambition, in this new exhibition, is to invite artists to interpret this universal value, to highlight its singularity, and to inhabit the format as they wish. The principle is simple: it is about freedom within a framework. The only constraint is respecting the given format.
