A common ground

Young Dubliners, Daragh Soden.

What connects a young girl in Maltby, Yorkshire, Pentecostal Christians, or a teenager in the Garonor mall parking lot in Aulnay-sous-Bois? At first glance, not much.

But fate brought these individuals into the paths of photographers captivated by their presence. They are now juxtaposed in this exhibition, which brings together works centered on the chance encounters and acute sensitivity to others. These photographers, all from the same generation, have been creating ambitious works for about a decade, offering a lyrical, tender, and fragile reimagining of reality. Working in a documentary style, they place urban spaces, streets, and marginal areas at the heart of their work.

The exhibition A Common Ground invites viewers to explore these photographic practices inspired by the immediacy, familiarity, and strength emerging from the shared spaces where lives unfold.

A legendary dimension for a cult format.

We all know this essential format and encounter it daily. Its history precedes us and dives us into a shared past.

The invention of paper sheets dates back to 105 AD in China, and it spread around 1350 in Europe; no specific format had been defined before. Each printer then designed their paper to the size and weight they wanted. It was not until 1786 that the German scientist and philosopher Georg Christoph Lichtenberg shaped the history of the A4 format and defined the ideal proportion of paper formats.

Elegant in its size, practical in its use, the 21x29.7 format has established itself as an essential standard and determines our daily practices.

The ambition, in this new exhibition, is to invite artists to interpret this universal value, to highlight its singularity, and to inhabit the format as they wish.

Standards are meant to be interpreted, diverted, and thwarted, and that is what this new exhibition will address.

Dear friends,

I wondered what I could wish you for this new start of the year, what would be enough right and relevant so this month of September can be more gentle, pleasing, ideal for amazement.

It would be presumptuous to think that I have found the solution but in the absence of a miracle, I wanted to try and make my modest part of the way by offering to gather around an exhibition displaying artists I love and I deeply wanted to share with you.

Like we do it on Instagram, but with the pleasure to see you instead of simply liking each other content. A night to meet, discuss, contemplate, benefit from a moment of shared love.

Looking forward to see you !

Sébastien

In the beginning was the Fire.

The titan Epimetheus, by distributing qualities to mortal beings, as Zeus had ordered him, took care of all species, with rigor and conscience, giving speed to some, wings to others, and thus building a harmonious system. But when Prometheus came to examine his work, he discovered in dismay that his brother had forgotten the men. There was nothing left for these poor souls, condemned to be born naked, destitute/helpless and vulnerable. To compensate for this imbalance, Prometheus decided to steal the fire and offer it to humans, who armed with this new power would now become the only ones capable of creating, manufacturing, building; and above all to invent their lives.

The exhibition presented at the Galerie Sebastien Lepeuve is homage/a tribute to this original flaw which turned out to be the most precious of gifts. It is because they had nothing at the beginning that humans could become everything. Each piece is an echo of this power to make, to invent, to produce. Painting, photography, sculpture, ceramics, writing, weaving, design, all disciplines are brought together in a cabinet of curiosities where the contemporary dialogues with the premises of humanity.

21- How to tell the World ? How to measure its substance, its matter, its glimmer ?

How to describe its soul, its sensuality, its abundance? For this first exhibition, the Galerie Sebastien Lepeuve wanted to open its space to photographic visions. Each piece of work presented is a proposition, a piece of what lies just right there; around us, an open window on our palpitations, giving substance to the living. The path is designed as an immersion in this humanity, fragile and spectacular, complex, and sovereign, diverse yet universal. A dive into this year, inside the jumble of the world. In our World.
